Glenn Loughran is the CAPP Artist In Residence at UCD Parity Studios 2017.
Supported through a new partnership between Create, Collaborative Arts Partnership Programme (CAPP) and UCD in the Community, College of Social Science and Law.
Exhibiting nationally and internationally, Glenn Loughran’s work has developed hybrid forms of artistic research at the intersection between pedagogical process and artistic intervention.
For the UCD residency he will use the studio resources and the campus context to expand upon two strands of research around the theory and practice of Socially Engaged Art:
- Theory: The ethics and politics of Contemporary Art as ‘mode of exchange’
This theoretical strand of the research will develop a historical analysis of ‘modes of exchange’ as they have developed in relation to the trinity of Capital/Nation/State. This work is initially informed by the work of Japanese Philosopher Kojin Karatani, whose systematic analysis of the Structure of World History (2014) argues for an understanding of structural change through ‘modes of exchange’ rather than ‘modes of production’. The aim of this analysis will be to explore an alternative theoretical framework for considering the contemporary turn towards socially engaged art.
- Practice: MODE : D :
Glenn will develop practical experimentations to support this theoretical inquiry. These will be based on an established platform, MODE : D that was developed in collaboration with the Robert Emmet Community Development Project. To date this platform has produced community engagements (Community Garden 2008-13), street furniture (Associate Bench/2012), ecological art projects (Bio-Aesthetics/2014) food events and academic discourses (Bio-Pedagogical dinners/2014), Conference organisation (States of Opacity. Dakar Biennale.2016), the design and curation of a public archive , titled: ‘Open Archive’ Sept – Dec 2016, and more recently a collaborative video essay titled ‘Fountain’(2016-17) Expanding upon this framework the project will develop artistic/pedagogical exchanges between the UCD campus and the RECDP with the support of UCD in the Community.
